As much as I hate to suggest spending more, if you’re going to buy a Pro iPhone this year, the Pro Max is what I’d go for with its beefier battery and the 5X zoom camera. The question is do you need a Pro iPhone or Apple’s latest? You can try to find the iPhone 14 Pro at other retailers for a cheaper price. Unless you’re all in on USB-C. If so, the convenience is worth spending more.

The 15 Pro is far from a breakthrough. Android phone owners have been enjoying the flexibility of USB-C for years. You’ll also find phones with more zoom, better multitasking capabilities, and a smarter assistant on the other side of the walled garden. But this is the first time these features are all coming together on an iPhone, and it’s an important moment if you’re firmly rooted in the iOS ecosystem, as many people are.

The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max are defined by their refinements. This pair of phones is one of the most compelling releases from Apple in years.

Of course, there’s also the non-pro models of the iPhone 15 to consider, and thanks to their new 48MP sensors and pretty colors, they’re a compelling, lower-cost alternative. They also charge via USB-C and come with the same new portrait image effects, which might be good enough for most people. Our review of that device is coming soon, so stay tuned if you can’t decide between the standard iPhone 15 or the Pro.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max could appear like a minor upgrade at first glance, but the combination of the much improved in-hand feel and better cameras really make a difference.

In virtually every respect, the iPhone 15 Pro Max raises the bar not only for the iPhone family but for smartphones in general. From the new materials to some of the best smartphone cameras we’ve ever used, Apple’s big flagship ticks box after box. It falls marginally short of perfection thanks to a slightly higher price tag than the last model, the lack of true fast charging, and Apple’s frustrating insistence on presenting 5x optical zoom as the apex of smartphone telephoto technology.

While the camera might be a little confusing for those of us who aren’t pro photographers, and it’s by no means cheap, the iPhone 15 Pro Max looks great and is effortless in its performance. It’s a fantastic all-round smartphone that’s hard to criticise.

If you want the very best iPhone money can buy these new devices need to go straight to the top of your shopping list. Apple has packed the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max full of must-have features including that new Action button, faster USB-C port and a processor that makes these gadgets feel like a mini games console.

Apple’s new iPhone Pro models have been improved across the board. They’re better in almost every way, and the new USB-C port is a very welcome addition. The design changes aren’t very flashy, and battery life hasn’t improved, but these are still excellent phones.

Yes, the iPhone as a class of device is a mature instrument. But the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max prove that there is so much more room for Apple to grow the archetype. It will just be growing inwards vs. outwards.

Although not a massive upgrade, the iPhone 15 Pro Max has some notable improvements over the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The most noticeable one is the new 5x zoom lens, which uses a clever tetraprism design to achieve a 120mm focal length. Besides, it has OIS and autofocus 3D sensor-shift for better stability and accuracy. This means users can now zoom in much closer than the 3x zoom on the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

As much as the iPhone 15 Pro Max remains Apple’s most capable handset, it is also the easiest to get along with. With the added flexibility of its 5x optical zoom, Action button and the ludicrously capable A17 chip, bending this powerhouse to your every whim has been made hassle-free by several new features that all add up to a tangible upgrade. Especially if you’ve been holding onto your old Pro for a good few years now.

While the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max delivered a better main camera and the Dynamic Island, the 15 Pros feel more packed with features. You get camera updates across the board, a terrific Portrait mode enhancement, more speed with plenty of GPU performance, and a modern design from Titanium. It’s a pretty substantial leap over last years, and if you’re coming from an older iPhone—Pro or not—you’ll score those major performance leaps that make for a better experience each day.

Yes, especially if it has been a couple of years since you last upgraded. If you’re coming from an iPhone 14 Pro, the improvements are less impactful but for those coming from an iPhone 13, this is a very worthwhile upgrade. From a strictly photographic standpoint, it’s the best Apple has to offer.
